  • Officials agree on date for new SPLOST vote

By Roy F. Chalker, Jr. rchalker@bellsouth.net Burke County Commissioners and the mayors of the county's municipalities agreed Tuesday to put a new Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) question on the November 8 General Election ballot. The county is almost exactly two years away from the expiration of the current SPLOST, which ends on March 31, 2018. If the new measure passes in November, there would be a seamless transition from the old tax to the new one. Enlarge Map Officials opted for the date of the General Election because of the usual high turnout generated in presidential election years. Also, in case the measure fails to pass, it would give the county and cities an opportunity to refine their project lists in order to gain more public support. However, SPLOST questions in previous years have passed by comfortable margins. Cities and the county commission have until August 10 to identify their projects and prepare their budgets for the November ballot. The funds will be allocated over a six year period according to population figures from the 2010 census. The officials elected to use a projection of $30,300,000 for the funding period based on the history of the current SPLOST, which is estimated to generate over $34 million by its conclusion.
