The Burke County Board of Commissioners received a $764,402 grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank to fund the Westside Waynesboro Truck Route Project. This project will provide a safe and efficient roadway for truck traffic coming into Waynesboro on Highways 56, 24 and 80 to avoid congestion downtown. It will connect State Route 56 and 24 to US 25 near the Walmart Shopping Center. Currently log trucks heading to Augusta mills and container trucks heading to the port have to navigate the streets in the City of Waynesboro. The reduction in the number of trucks in the middle of town will provide a safer environment for pedestrians and personal vehicles in Waynesboro. The funding for this project is coming primarily from the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) better known as TSPLOST. The County Commissioners have agreed to provide $700,000 in local funds to improve the route. The grant from GTIB will provide the remaining funds needed for this project. It is scheduled for completion by the end of December 2019.
