Georgia County Commissioners Advocate for County Priorities at the White House

Washington – Burke County Commissioners Lucious Abrams, Terri Lodge Kelly and Evans Martin joined more than 100 Georgia county leaders at the White House for a day of meetings with key administration officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue, and Senator David Perdue.
County commissioners heard from federal departments and agencies, including the Small Business Administration, Energy, Transportation, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security and Housing and Urban Development. They discussed how federal policies impact Georgia counties and residents. Topics included the opioid epidemic, workforce housing, infrastructure, natural disaster preparations, health care reform along with the latest developments at Plant Vogtle and the Georgia Ports expansion.
Holiday Season Will Bring Increased DUI Enforcement In Georgia

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and law enforcement officers this holiday season to remind all motorists that drinking and driving will not only get you on Santa’s naughty list, but it will also send you straight to jail. “The Burke County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in increased enforcement activities in conjunction with state and other local officers” according to Chief Deputy Lewis Blanchard.
Court Proceedings Cancelled on Mon & Tues Due to Hurricane Irma

Please be advised ALL court proceedings scheduled for Monday, September 11 and Tuesday, September 12, 2017, in Burke County Courthouse, Columbia County Justice Center, and Augusta-Richmond County Judicial Center have been cancelled. Personnel shall follow the directives of their respective employers.
Regular court sessions will resume Wednesday, September 13, 2017, unless otherwise notified.
